Villarreal Women lost 2-3 against Sevilla Women in a match marred by refereeing controversy. In the closing stages, a penalty wasn’t given after a handball in the opposition box. Before then, Sevilla had gone ahead with two Inma Gabarro goals, before the Yellows cut one back with an own goal, before a Payne header looked like it had sealed the win for the away side. Sara Monforte’s side did not give up, and Belén Martínez scored in the 89th minute. In added time, Débora handled the ball inside the box, but the referee did not interpret it as a penalty.
The Sevillian side went ahead with two quick Gabarro goals, which were harsh punishment for the Yellows.
Sheila Guijarro and Belén could have scored, but Esther made two great saves. Pancha Lara also hit the woodwork.
Villarreal Women got a goal back at the start of the second half. Belén’s shot from out wide after a cross from Deep, and the ball ended up going in after touching a Sevilla defender (1-2, m.50).
Payne scored the 1-3. In the 70th minute, Roma María put a ball into the box from the left and the striker headed firmly into the back of the net.
Just at the end of 90 minutes, Belén got on the end of another ball in the box to send it into the back of the net and add excitement to the closing stages (2-3). In added time, the ball touched Débora’s arm in the box, but the referee decided it was not a penalty.
