Villarreal FC celebrated its 90th Anniversary with an agonising win against Sporting Gijon thanks to the Imperious Uche who scored both goals for Villarreal, the second of which was delivered in the dying seconds of extra time. This win gave Marcelino Garcia Toral's team three more precious points, putting them a mere five points off second place in the league.
Villarreal came out strong from the start, looking to control the midfield, forging forward towards the goal constantly creating danger in their attacking third. However, Sporting's defence held fast, posing a real challenge for the home team. Fortunately the Yellows did not have to wait long for their first opportunity. In the third minute Farinós made a great pass to, the unmarked Nigerian, Uche who took control and managed to get around the defence leaving him one to one against Sporting's goalie Cuéllar. Uche fired an amazing shot but unfortunately the ball went a couple of centimetres wide and hit the left goal post and ricocheted away.
In the 10th minute, the Nigerian went down in the area but unfortunately for the Yellows the referee did not award a penalty, despite the appeals of the home crowd. Villarreal continued to maintain possession of the ball but with no clear opportunities on goal. The Submarines remained on the edges of the Asturian area, trying but without success to break through their tight defence, that is until, Musaccio found the feet of Uche who fired a brilliant shot at full speed from a tight angle that beat Cuéllar to the right hand corner, bringing the score to 1-0.
The away team responded by taking control and dominating possession, trying to give Juan Carlos a run for his money, but he held firm and managed to hold off the attempts made by the Asturians.
In the second half Sporting found their stride and managed to keep possession in the home teams half. In the 55th minute Sangoy made a pass from the side that literally crossed the goal mouth but, luckily for the Submarines, Bilic couldn't quite make it to the ball.
In the 58th minute Jonathan Pereira nearly scored Villarreal's second goal but his brilliant effort was denied by the super quick reflexes of Cuéllar.
In the 65th minute Sporting finally found their mark thanks to a rapid pass from Trejo to an unmarked Sangoy, who with a low and precise shot brought the score to 1-1.
Fifteen minutes from the final whistle, Aquino who was playing a good game thus far, made an inspired shot on goal from outside the box that was incredibly unlucky to hit the cross bar. With the game wide open the Yellows surrounded the oppositions goal desperately searching for an opportunity to break their defence and win the game, while Sporting was equally hoping to win possession and become a danger on the counter attack.
In the dying moments Perbet made a brilliant pass in the area that nearly found Bruno's feet, but was ultimately unsuccessful, however all was not lost as the final surprise was yet to come.
With everything to play for in dying seconds of extra time, Bruno spotted Uche was unmarked and without thinking twice, gave the Nigerian a perfect pass which he handled impeccably and managed to score, placing his shot mere millimetres away from the reach of Cuéllar, driving the final score up to 2-1 on the 90th anniversary of the club, just as God intended.
