Villarreal were unable to see off the challenge of Barcelona's B side going down to their first home league defeat of the season after a match that saw the power of the Catalan's reserve side inflict the killer blow on Julio Velazquez's men (1-3).
Everything pointed to a potentially frantic encounter and that's just how it turned out from the first minute. With both sides looking to play a brisk and open game, it wasn't long before the chances started to appear. Uche had already shown his intentions earlier on before Cani wriggled his way into the box before putting in Cavenaghi whose point blank effort was saved by Masip
The following minutes saw a timid Villarreal attack look to threaten the visitors' goal while Barca B were also looking to get close to Juan Carlos in the home goal and while the match was developing into a tussle for control of the ball, Bruno scared the life out of the Barca keeper with a shot that flew just past the post.
Seconds before half time, Juan Carlos brilliantly saved Delofeu's penalty following handball by Mellberg only for the visitors to take the lead with the subsequent corner when Planas hit home from close range after the ball had been headed on, to put Eusebio Sacristan's men ahead.
Villarreal took the initiative after the break against a Barca side much more closed in than usual and looking to break on the counter. With 56 minutes gone a great pass from Bruno found Trigueros whose fierce cross shot brought a finger tip save rom the keeper.
Eager to get on terms the Yellows threw themselves into the attack and in the 64th minute Jonathan Pereira, on for Cavenaghi collected the ball on the edge of the area and then saw off nthe defence before hitting his effort just wide of the right hand post.
Ten minutes later and following a rare incursion into the Villarreal area, Lobato put his side further ahead with an unstoppable strike from the edge of the only for the Yellows to reduce the arrears when Senna hit home his penalty following a clear foul on Uche.
With just the one goal separating the two sides, the pace of the match quickened and Uche had a great chance which culminated in a rocket from Hernan Perez that Masip just got his hands to.
And with 10 minutes remaining came the play that would decided the game. Sergio Roberto found himself one on one with Juan Carlos after Barca had stolen the ball and although he was unable to beat Juan Carlos with his effort the ball rebounded off Jaume Costa for a third strike for the visitors.
