Submarine go down 2-0 against Girona despite spirited performance marked by controversial refereeing display from Prieto Iglesias

Goals from Benja and Jandro (pen) were enough to defeat Villarreal against Girona at the Municipal de Montilivi following a good display from the Yellows that should have earned at least a draw for the visiting side that created most of the chances but were unable to finish. They were also not helped by a crucial refereeing decision from match official, Prieto Iglesias who missed a clear second half penalty shout for Villarreal when Tebar clearly fouled Musacchio in the area. With the score 1-0 at the time, a penalty decision would also have meant a second yellow card for the Girona player.

It was Villarreal that took control of the ball in the first half and created the best chances. With Manu Trigueros and Bruno working as a double pivot in midfield, the visitors looked to threaten mainly through Hernan Perez's lightning breaks on the right wing with Cani looking to feed off his work in the middle while Uche also up front, and Cavenaghi just behind the main striker looked to a more elaborate approach.

Girona tightened their defensive line looking to counter attack against a visiting defence that also looked solid. The best chances of the half fell to Villarreal; first Cavenaghi's shot from 25 yards flew narrowly over; then Hernan Perez and Uche hit chances wide before Mellberg's header following a corner grazed the crossbar. At the other end the home side's only real chance came from Benja's header that was easily dealt with by Marino.

Girona took the lead five minutes into the second half when Benja sent Jandro's cross home following a corner. And in the next attack came the game's controversial moment. Referee Prieto Iglesias failed to see a clear pull by Tebar on Musacchio that not only would have earned Villarreal a penalty but also a second yellow card for Tebar. Villarreal continued to look for the equaliser and Cavenaghi had a great chance following a pass from Hernan Perez only for the defence to clear from under their own posts. The Argentinian front man also squandered a great one-on-one chance after great play assisted by Cani.

And at the very time that Villarreal looked most worthy of a draw came the killer blow for the Submarine following a counter attack that culminated in handball by Mellberg in the box that would earn the home side a penalty and the Yellow defender his second yellow card. Jandro made no mistake from the spot to earn his side the maximum reward for the very few chances created
