Villarreal earned a valiant victory following this visit to the Madrigal from Alcorcon (4-0) after an impressive display from Julio Velazquez's men that put the Madrid side on the ropes before finishing them off with goals from Bruno, Uche, Hernan Perez, and Cavenaghi. In the end a great victory, - and a great morale boost – made better by Elche's draw and the defeat of Almeria.
With Alcorcon starting the game by pressing up front, Villarreal took longer than usual to settle but still enjoyed chances to get the scoreboard moving. Trigueros served notice first before Uche had a great chance to put the Yellows ahead.
Cavenaghi started the move with a pass to Cani on the right flank and the Zaragoza man's superb low cross found Uche who reached the ball before Manu only to send his effort inches past the keeper's post.
Well organised on the pitch Alcorcon were asking questions of the Submarine with their pressure game, but Villarreal soon sorted themselves out to threaten the Madrid club's lines. And with 27 minutes played the Yellows had their first chance to take the lead following a clear foul from Manu Fernandez on Uche only for Marcos Senna to send his spot kick flying over.
Following the spot kick Villarreal looked to organise their lines to come out from the back, while Alcorcon maintained their same game plan. And with 35 minutes played, excellent triangular play between Trigueros, who received the ball on the second third, before finding Joan Oriol to put in a magnificent cross to Uche only for the ball to finish just inches from the goal before being cleared at the last minute by the visiting defence.
A fine first half display received its just reward just five minutes into the second half. Uche was the architect of the goal finding Cavenaghi who at full pace on the right hand side of the area put in the killer pass to Bruno who put the Submarine ahead.
A goal to the good, the Submarine relaxed as the Madrid side poured forward in search of an equaliser, giving the home side the perfect chance to strike on the break. With 68 minutes played a fierce strike from Senna came close to putting the Yellows further ahead only for the midfielders effort to fly just over.
With 74 minutes played it was Manu Tigueros who tried his luck following a pass from Hernan Perez but it would be Uche that would ultimately finish the game as a contest.. Cavenaghi received the ball in midfield before sending a superb pass to an unmarked Bruno whose first time pass found Uche who netted to finish the game as a contest.
Villarreal then launched themselves at PepeBordalas's broken team as they looked to finish off the match. With 85 minutes played, impressive individual work from Hernan Perez put the Yellows further ahead when his effort was hit through Manu Fernandez's legs.
But the show was still not finished. With added on time beckoning Javi Venta's pass from the right was met by Cavenaghi whose impressive finish made it 4-0. An impressive win which leave the Submarine just four points short of direct promotion.
