Culture and football go hand in hand outside the stadium. The Estadio de la Cerámica square will exhibit, for a year and a half, the 'Silvia' and 'María' structures from prestigious artist Jaume Plensa, thanks to an agreement with Vila-real town council, the Fundación Hortensia Herrero and Mercadona to promote art and cultural heritage.
The unveiling ceremony took place at midday today in the square, with participation from Hortensia Herrero, president of the Fundación Hortensia Herrero; José Benlloch, Vila-real mayor; Juan Roig, Mercadona president; Fernando Roig, Villarreal president; and the exhibition commissioner Javier Molins. A number of Villarreal CF board members were also in attendance.
The giant sculptures are two of seven from Plensa's exhibition, that was made possible by the Fundación Hortensia Herrero last year in the Ciutat de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia. They are two seven-metre tall figures, with each of them weighing 7,000kg. They were bought by Mercadona and the Fundación. By being moved to Vila-real, they have now been exhibited in the three provinces of the Region of Valencia, having previously been in the cities of Valencia and Elche.
