The Villarreal manager, Javi Calleja, has appeared in front of the media to analyse the build-up to the cup tie with Girona FC (Wednesday, 9pm). The Yellow manager has stressed the importance of seeing an intense and focused Villarreal from start to finish: “To progress through this round, we must give 100%. Be an intense team, maintain concentration for 90 minutes and have a winning mentality. Do not focus so much on the rival and be focused on ourselves, to exploit all our virtues.”
After the defeat against Espanyol, Calleja explained that the team has already turned the page and is totally focused on the round 16 tie in Montilivi: “We had a very bad start to both the first and second half. That defined the whole game. We must show that we are in the game from the first minute. We have the opportunity to prove it against Girona. They are a team in Segunda, but have a squad with many players who could play in the top flight. We must go out focused and attentive so we don’t repeat what happened the other day.”
In addition, Javi Calleja has expressed his concern for the storm that is hitting the entire Mediterranean coast: “It is an important factor for the game. The rain is not stopping. It is possible that the pitch will be waterlogged and not in the best conditions to play the football we like. I hope that we can play. We will see how the day is tomorrow and whether we can play or not.”
